Dr. Hans-Rainer Jaenichen was born in Seelow in 1955. He studied biology at the University of Hohenheim and completed his Ph.D. in molecular immunology at the University of Munich in the laboratory of Prof. H. G. Zachau. After receiving his doctorate, he began training in the firm of VOSSIUS & PARTNER and was admitted to practice as a German Patent Attorney (Patentanwalt) in 1987, as a European Patent Attorney in 1989, and as a European Trademark Attorney in 1996. Dr. Jaenichen became a partner in the firm in 1990. He works predominantly on opposition, revocation, and patent litigation cases.
Dr. Jaenichen has given numerous lectures in Germany and abroad on how to patent and enforce biotechnology inventions; he has authored numerous publications in his field and co-publishes the magazine "Biotechnology Law Report". In 2006, the fourth edition of his book on the European Patent Office's case law on biotechnology inventions entitled "From Clones to Claims" was published by the publishing house Heymanns. This book also contains comparisons with U.S. and Japanese case law and practice contributed by his American and Japanese co-authors. Dr. Jaenichen has repeatedly been rated by the specialized press as one of the leading individuals in Intellectual Property in Germany. Between 2005 and 2009 he has published a number of articles about the amendment of the German Patent Act, the questions when there is possession of a complete invention, whether minor deviations can destroy priority and how to protect and enforce medical use claims under EPC2000.
